Connection
Experience connection and care
Experience a positive, inclusive working environment where everyone is welcome, as we respect and look out for the safety and wellbeing of each other and our communities. We value diverse perspectives, share experiences and work collaboratively.
A culture of health and safety
Safety is our number one priority at BlueScope, and we see being a leader in safety as a continuous learning journey. We support all our people to work safely, identify risks and develop ways to protect the health and safety of themselves and their colleagues. In 2023, BlueScope was recognised for Excellence in Safety and Health Management Practices by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
Increasingly, integrating new technology is key to building our capability in safety. We are working to transform processes using automation and re-engineering processes to reduce manual effort, which is improving productivity and enhancing our employee experience. At our Port Kembla Steelworks, we have onsite health advisors, occupational nurses and physiotherapists to support our employees. There are physiotherapists at Western Port and our other rural and metro sites, where we’re continuing to expand our offer of on-site physiotherapy.
Opportunities to connect and collaborate
We support new employees and encourage them to connect and build relationships at work, community and social events and play a role in helping the people we live and work with, in the communities where we operate.
To foster a stronger sense of belonging, we offer events and networks such as LGBTQIA+ Pride, Parents, ASPire Women, Ladies in Finance Time (Finance, Procurement and IT), and Women in Steel (Australia wide).
There are also site and team-specific ways to connect and collaborate with your colleagues and enhance your skills by sharing your knowledge, expertise and ideas.
We care about our people’s wellbeing
Our Health and Wellbeing at Work Model applies an integrated approach to taking action and identifying opportunities as we seek to protect, support and promote the health and wellbeing of our people. Our strong culture of leadership is focused on care.
We provide an extensive health and wellbeing program to support all our employees. It includes a generous bundle of free, anonymous counselling, financial and legal support, as well as an online platform with several wellbeing resources and self-help tools, including fitness, nutrition, social and mental wellbeing applications.
At BlueScope we’re normalising flexible work and all our positions have some degree of flexibility. Under our B-Flex: Flexible Work Guideline we support our people to explore arrangements that make sense for them and their team, plus our business and our customers.
First Nations Framework
Embedded in our ASP Vision and Strategy, this framework demonstrates our commitment to enhance representation, engagement and inclusion of First Nations people across our business. We are making positive impacts across Community, Employment, Employee Engagement and Supply Chain.
This artwork titled ‘Muru’ (a Dharawal word meaning Country/Path) is by JS Koori Designs and remains the property of Jasmin Sarin (Dharawal, Kamilaroi and Jerrinja). It has been licenced to BlueScope to use for First Nations engagement work for a period of 3 years to June 2025.
Building on the strong foundation of our inclusive culture
We are committed to being an inclusive workplace where people belong and which reflects the diversity of the communities in which we operate, while supporting under-represented groups. We welcome people of varied ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, family status, experience, perspectives and religious belief.
Since 2022, BlueScope has been named an Inclusive Employer by the Diversity Council of Australia (DCA). We are a proud signatory to the 40:40:20 Vision, an initiative to achieve gender balance in executive leadership across all ASX200 companies by 2030. (Our Executive and Board are 40per cent female). In Australia, we’re progressing initiatives including a gender-neutral and inclusive parental leave policy, flexible work guidelines, a growing pipeline of women in STEM positions, enhanced domestic-violence leave provisions and forums for women to connect.
To build a culturally safe workplace for First Nations people, we provide a variety of cultural awareness learning and training opportunities to increase our people's understanding and appreciation of First Nations cultures.
Meet our people
“I've got an eye condition, so I use a cane.
The most positive thing I did was start talking about it. It reached a point of necessity and I actually found I was empowered by being able to talk about it and share what was happening and what it meant for me.
The support I received around me reached untold levels and I now welcome talking about my condition.”
Brian - S&P Quality Manager (Product Innovation and Technology)
“Where I find confidence in BlueScope is in our culture, our human connectedness, and our ability to come together to problem-solve, innovate and transform.
Our goal is to be an environmentally sound, socially equitable and economically viable organisation long into the future and our ability to connect and collaborate sits at the heart of that.
All the innovation projects we’ve delivered were made possible by diversity of thought, experiences and insight.”
Marijana - National Marketing and Innovation Manager (Distribution)
“I'm a person on the autism spectrum and that's more of what they call an invisible disability. My needs are not as obvious. Coming into the office and being here five days a week is very exhausting, so we've agreed I have a B-flex arrangement and come into the office two days a week. That allows me to recover; work from home is a less sensory-filled environment.
I have a very supportive team who have been supportive of my disclosure of being on the autism spectrum. I get checked in on if there are certain situations that may be a bit higher-sensory. It can go a long way to making work life more comfortable.”
Mitchell - Digital Finance Analyst (Finance Operations and Transformation)
