Contribution
Deliver work that matters
Every action you take matters in delivering for our customers and strengthening communities for the future. We value what you do. Be part of the action as we transform our business, living Our Bond and working towards Our Purpose.
Recognition for purposeful action
As well as celebrating successes, achievements and milestones such as years of service, we value and recognise our people’s actions towards living Our Bond and delivering on Our Purpose. To show appreciation for their contribution, our leaders provide feedback and recognition to our people every day. We also acknowledge the work of our people and teams in email announcements from our leaders. We increase the visibility of people who develop breakthrough projects and business improvements by ensuring their work is showcased. Everyone’s work is linked to BlueScope’s business objectives, so our people can see how their contribution helps us deliver on our strategy.
We act with integrity and speak up
At BlueScope, we choose to do the right thing, the right way, and act with integrity. We make conscious choices that consider the impact of our decisions on all of our stakeholders, and we do what we say we will. We have activities in place to promote integrity such as our Competition and Consumer Law training and How We Work Code of Conduct, as well as strict practices in place around integrity of pricing data and customer sensitivities.
We’re committed to fostering a culture of speaking up when something isn’t right and protecting those who raise genuine concerns and offer a range of channels to report concerns confidentially.
We use two immersive learning modules, Respectful Behaviours and Leading Respectful Behaviours, to promote respect in our workplace, and both have been nominated for a 2024 Australian Training and Development Award. We also participate in the WorkWell Respect Network of the National Association of Women in Operations (NAWO).
Purpose-driven and action-focused
Every one of our employees contributes to living Our Bond and delivering on Our Purpose: ‘We create and inspire smart solutions in steel, to strengthen our communities for the future'. Through our people’s work and BlueScope-wide initiatives, we deliver for our customers and protect our local communities.
We respect the values and cultural heritage of our local communities and seek to contribute actively with our Strengthen Communities Investment Framework, which sets out how we partner with our communities and how our people can get involved. We use this to contribute to a suite of projects that support shelter, science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM), education, community buildings, diversity and inclusion and health, safety and environment initiatives. Through our network of business units and sites, we support hundreds of community groups around Australia.
Our Annual Environment Awards celebrate people and projects at BlueScope that make a positive impact on the environment. In FY2023, globally, our people reduced carbon dioxide emissions (equal to 3,600 fewer cars on the road), dropped electricity usage by 13,000 MWh (equal to the annual power required for 2,000 homes) and reduced freshwater consumption (equal to 81 Olympic-sized swimming pools).
Transforming our systems, tools and technology
To support our people in getting their work done effectively, we have several exciting digital transformation projects happening. Across manufacturing, office-based and remote work, we’re investing in new capabilities to improve productivity and our customer and employee experience. As our customer experience team works to deliver new digital technology and transformation projects, we are improving the overall journey and satisfaction of our customers.
We’re moving from traditional technology to cloud-first companywide transformations. This means new technology platforms, several IT programs, cloud data and analytics projects for both business and consumer channels, and purpose-built solutions in AI, machine-learning, automation, digital twin technology and advanced Internet of Things sensors.
Meet our people
“The best part of working here is the feeling of contributing to something. I know when I see a COLORBOND® steel roof or fence that I had a part in making it. It's an exciting time to be working at BlueScope on the future of steelmaking.
The innovation and growth required are a great opportunity. A large part of my role over the last couple of years has been about the aim to lower our carbon dioxide intensity and increasing our recycled scrap consumption. It’s something that I’m proud to have been a part of.”
Ruby - Technical Coordinator (Manufacturing)
“The best part of working here is the people, hands down and by a long shot. Everyone from the crews we have, who are absolutely phenomenal people, to our support staff and supervisors who make working here very pleasurable.
Our management staff are nice and approachable, and they fix any problems that we have. I love the people we work with and have no intention of going anywhere. Give me another 20 years!”
Christopher - Operator (Manufacturing)
“Through authentic leadership I’ve been able to support a workplace culture based on physical and psychological safety, by listening to employee feedback and actively facilitating problem solving. I’m also passionate about sharing our first-class safety practices with our customers and other partners within and outside our business.
As an operational leader with previous experience as a training and HR professional, BlueScope has given me the foundations to genuinely support our people and customers.”
Deb - State Operations Manager, Victoria (Orrcon Steel)
