The maintenance required to be completed on the Waste Gas Cleaning Plant has been completed ahead of schedule. On Tuesday 4 June 2024, the plant reverted to using the Waste Gas Cleaning Plant and out of ‘bypass mode’. All air emission testing results during the bypass operation complied with the Environment Protection Licence 6092 licence limits.

Sinter Plant Waste Gas Cleaning Plant - Bypass Maintenance Update

BlueScope will temporarily bypass the Waste Gas Cleaning Plant which serves the Sinter Plant at our Port Kembla Steelworks. We expect the WGCP to be in ‘bypass mode’ for up to 2 weeks beginning on Wednesday 29 May 2024, which will allow time to perform the required maintenance activities. This is because of a process event which was identified on Monday, 27 May 2024.

BlueScope installed additional monitoring equipment and controls following the fire at the Sinter Plant Waste Gas Cleaning Plant (WGCP) stack in late 2014.  This included enhanced processes, procedures, and specific bypass licence conditions to maintain the safe and efficient operation of the Waste Gas Cleaning Plant. Whilst there may be some visible emissions from the Sinter Plant during this period, we can assure the community that the plant will continue to operate within its existing stringent environmental licence limits as regulated by the EPA.

We will be conducting extensive air emissions monitoring during the bypass period with the results reported on the BlueScope in the Illawarra website - click here.

The EPA have been advised of the interim arrangement.
