Traditionally, the canteens across the BlueScope Port Kembla site have had bins allocated for general waste and paper/cardboard only. They are now diverting waste away from landfill by implementing organics recycling and mixed recyclables within their premises.

Organic waste collected from the four canteens on site was weighed weekly, and we've worked out that annual landfill diversion equals 27.2 tonnes.

Alongside this, and on a bigger scale, a total of 96 tonnes of Vacuum Degasser Brick from our steelmaking operation was diverted last year from landfill and sent for re-use as a second hand refractory material.
