BlueScope site certification
We have long held the view that certification can give our customers and communities confidence in the environmental, social and governance performance of our steelmaking and steel processing facilities.
BlueScope has proudly played an active role in the development, collaborative engagement and promotion of the ResponsibleSteel™ Standard, and we are committed to pursuing ResponsibleSteel™ Site Certification at sites within our business.
Port Kembla Steelworks achieves ResponsibleSteel™ site certification
BlueScope employees and our stakeholders worked extensively to achieve ResponsibleSteel™ certification at our Port Kembla Steelworks (PKSW) in Australia. We continue to implement improvements and learn from the process designed to strengthen our business, industry and local communities.
ResponsibleSteel™ certification creates a valuable point of difference for the Port Kembla Steelworks, the first site in the Asia Pacific region, and the fourth steelmaker in the world to obtain certification. Achieved in early 2022, we believe that the recognition reflects the quality of our operations and how positively we seek to engage with our stakeholders, in particular our customers, suppliers, employees and communities. Western Port achieves ResponsibleSteel™ site certification
BlueScope has achieved its second ResponsibleSteel™ certification for its Western Port site in Victoria, Australia. The certification reflects the outstanding efforts of the Western Port team and the quality of our operations.
Western Port is part of a fully integrated steel supply chain with hot rolled coil sourced from BlueScope’s Port Kembla Steelworks. The site has committed to a 30% reduction in emissions intensity by 2030 and has worked diligently to minimise its impact on the surrounding environment. The Western Port site has proven particularly strong in engaging and supporting local communities through Community Liaison Committee meetings and local projects. NS BlueScope Vietnam achieves ResponsibleSteel™ site certification
In 2024, our Vietnam site at Phu My achieved core site certification. Phu My is the first to receive site certification within the Vietnamese steel industry, as well as the first pre-painted steel site to achieve this recognition in South-East Asia.
Achieving ResponsibleSteel™ core site certification is an impressive effort for NS BlueScope Vietnam. This certification is a testament to our Vietnam business' dedication to sustainable operations and support for their local communities. View the ResponsibleSteel™ certification.
The Phu My site was the third in the BlueScope portfolio to achieve core site certification and we are continuing to look at opportunities for more BlueScope facilities to join the ResponsibleSteel™ community in the future.
ResponsibleSteel™ is the global steel industry's multi-stakeholder sustainability standard and certification program, designed to ensure that customers, stakeholders and consumers can be confident that the steel they use has been sourced and produced responsibly.
ResponsibleSteel’s vision is that steel’s contribution to a sustainable society is maximised. Its mission is to enhance the responsible sourcing, production, use and recycling of steel by:
The ResponsibleSteel™ International Production Standard (formerly known as the ResponsibleSteel Standard) is designed to support the responsible production of steel, as a tool for the achievement of Responsible Steel’s vision. The certification applies to steelmaking sites and to related sites that process raw materials for steelmaking or produce steel products.
There are 13 principles in the ResponsibleSteel™ International Production Standard that cover a wide range of sustainability topics such as health and safety, labour and human rights, climate change, water stewardship and responsible sourcing. The standard is the basis for:
To obtain Steel Certification sites are audited against four Progress Levels assessing progress on decarbonisation and responsible materials sourcing. Sites that obtain at least Progress Level 1 for both decarbonisation and materials sourcing can market their steel products as certified steel.
Businesses from every part of the steel supply chain, civil society groups, associations, and other organisations with an interest in a sustainable steel industry from anywhere in the world are welcome to join. For more than 10 years, BlueScope has played a foundational role in the establishment of ResponsibleSteel™, helping to realise our shared vision for a sustainable steel industry. We have long held the view that certification can give our customers confidence in the environmental, social and governance performance of our steelmaking facilities. We have proudly played an active role in the development, collaborative engagement and promotion of the Standard.
As uptake of the ResponsibleSteel™ Site Certification continues at pace, we continue to partner in the development of further ResponsibleSteel™ Standards for Certified Steel, addressing key challenges in the greenhouse gas emissions performance and responsible sourcing.
Our role in the development and application of the ResponsibleSteel Standard is an important part of how we strive to create strength along the steel value chain.
ResponsibleSteel™ aims to provide specifiers and building practitioners with confidence that they are specifying steel from a facility that has demonstrated responsible sourcing and production practices.
In Australia, ResponsibleSteel™ certification has been formally recognised in the Green Star ‘Responsible Products Framework’, operated by the Green Building Council of Australia. All products manufactured at a ResponsibleSteel™ certified site are recognised as ‘Good Practice’ products under the Framework. This means that all our Australian products, produced from steel manufactured at Port Kembla Steelworks, can potentially support our customers' steps towards achieving Green Star ratings.
